I am fairly sick of today being called “an historic day”. All inaugurations are historic. The fact that the most powerful government on the planet can transfer power peacefully is a huge accomplishment of modern civilization, and a feat that I think would make our founders proud. (One of the very few things that would make our founders proud. 99% of what goes on in govt these days would have them drafting another Declaration.) The fact that Obama is not a northern european man is also fairly significant.
I really don’t get why people keep calling the man black. Maybe the charade is a good thing, but the simple fact is that the sad plight of black Americans really only applies to black Americans who are not immigrant Africans, but descendants of slaves. The vast majority of African immigrants do not identify with the black American community, nor is their cultural heritage in any way similar to each other. Now its great that we have a president who is not a lilly-white northern european, but it really says nothing about the legacy of slavery or anything like that, because Obama has absolutely nothing in common with regular black Americans. Well, I guess the fact that he was raised by his grandmother creates some kind of similarity, because many black Americans are raised by their grandparents, given the sad state of the black American family, but Obama’s grandma who raised him is white, so that’s not even that close of a comparison either.
